Color Matching Gone Wrong: 3 Mistakes That Cost Brands Reprints

February 11, 2026

Color consistency is critical to brand identity. When label colors don’t come out as expected, the result is often costly reprints, delays and frustration.

In most cases, these issues can be traced back to a few common mistakes made early in the process.

Reason 1: Relying on Screens Instead of Print Standards

One of the most common issues is assuming that on-screen colors will match the final printed result. Digital screens display color in RGB, while printing uses CMYK or Pantone systems, which behave very differently.

Without proper conversion and calibration, color shifts are almost inevitable. What looks correct on screen can appear duller, darker or completely off once printed.

Reason 2: Skipping Physical Proofs

Digital proofs are useful for checking layout and content, but they cannot fully replicate how a label will appear in real life. Factors such as material, ink absorption and lighting conditions all influence the final result.

Skipping physical proofs may seem like a time saver, but it often leads to reprints when expectations don’t match reality.

Reason 3: Overlooking Material and Finish

Color does not exist in isolation, it is always affected by the material it is printed on. A gloss finish reflects light differently from a matte one, while transparent or metallic elements can significantly alter how colors are perceived.

Without testing on the actual substrate, even correctly specified colors can produce unexpected results.

Getting It Right Starts Early

Avoiding color issues requires more than just correct artwork, it requires a structured approach from the beginning.

During the quoting and pre-production stage, Super Labels review artwork, confirm color specifications and consider how chosen materials and finishes will influence the final outcome. Where needed, we recommend adjustments or proofing to ensure accuracy before full production.

Consistency Through Proofing and Standards

To ensure reliable results, our team carry out colour proofing before printing, allowing us to match the output as closely as possible to approved references. This may include aligning with previously printed files, even those produced years ago, or matching exact colour values provided by the client.

In addition, we apply consistent colour standards during production. By controlling the printing process and referencing approved samples or historical jobs, we ensure that new labels remain visually consistent with previous batches, helping brands maintain a stable and recognisable identity over time.
